The Charisma Machine
Drawing on fieldwork in Paraguay, Morgan G. Ames follows One Laptop per Child to show how technological salvation projects universalize privileged childhoods and erase teachers, care, and infrastructure.

The Charisma Machine does more than explain why One Laptop per Child (OLPC) failed. It asks why a project could repeatedly miss its promises and still captivate engineers, governments, philanthropists, and journalists. Announced in 2005, OLPC proposed that an inexpensive, rugged, supposedly hand-powered XO laptop would let children across the Global South bypass inadequate schools and teach themselves into a digital future. The hand crank never materialized, and costs and maintenance exceeded the slogan, yet the vision remained compelling. Ames calls this capacity to make a device appear morally righteous and socially transformative “technological charisma.”
That charisma has a cultural history. Ames traces it through MIT hacker culture, Seymour Papert’s constructionist theory of learning, and the figure of the “technically precocious boy.” Designers projected a resource-rich, middle-class, and masculinized memory of childhood onto children everywhere: the authentic child supposedly wants to take machines apart, write programs, and rebel against teachers, while school is merely a factory that suppresses creativity. This is not an innocent user profile. It turns a gendered and classed developmental path into a universal instinct and renders teachers, mothers, caregivers, and children uninterested in coding conceptually invisible.
The book gains its authority from Ames’s ethnographic work in Paraguay. Through months of observation, interviews, test data, and repair records, she follows the everyday life of a deployment of roughly ten thousand XO laptops. Schools needed wiring and networks; underpaid and overburdened teachers needed training; parents and local NGO workers performed continual translation, maintenance, and support. The device that was expected to “speak for itself” depended on an extensive human and material infrastructure. Broken machines, slow connections, and short-lived batteries were not incidental implementation problems but facts that determined what education could occur.
Children also refused the designers’ script. Around two-thirds rarely used the laptops: some devices were unusable, while many students simply found them frustrating or uninteresting. Those who did use them often sought the internet, music, video, games, and file sharing rather than the prescribed constructionist software. Ames does not reduce these practices to failure. Refusal and repurposing demonstrate children’s agency. At the same time, that agency was shaped by bandwidth, household resources, peer cultures, and transnational media corporations rather than existing outside power.
For feminist technology studies, the crucial intervention is to restore maintenance to the story of innovation. Apparent success often depended on mothers, aunts, teachers, and community workers who encouraged children and kept systems functioning, yet public narratives credited a charismatic machine and an innately gifted child. Once gendered care work is erased, technology appears to create value autonomously; once infrastructure is erased, failure can be blamed on local schools, cultures, or insufficiently motivated users. The same pattern remains visible in educational technology, AI tutoring, and platforms marketed as solutions for poverty.
Ames is not arguing that computers cannot support learning, nor does she portray children in the Global South as passive victims. Her target is the substitution of a product for political investment. Where schools lack sanitation, paper, reliable electricity, supported teachers, and durable repair systems, a striking device cannot replace public education. The close study of one Paraguayan project cannot represent every OLPC deployment, but its scale is a strength: it reveals the friction, rejection, improvisation, and compromise that aggregate evaluations routinely discard.
The book therefore offers a method for recognizing technological salvation. Whenever a product claims to “disrupt” education or eliminate inequality, readers can ask: whose childhood is imagined as normal? Which teachers, caregivers, and repair workers disappear from the account? Who absorbs breakdown and long-term cost? Does the project strengthen institutions, or merely perform an attractive future for funders? For FemRes, these questions move digital feminism beyond representation toward design power, epistemic colonialism, reproductive labor, and the distribution of public resources.
