Recoding Gender begins with a historical fact capable of unsettling contemporary technological common sense: programming was not born male, and the computer industry did not develop along a straight line cleared by solitary male geniuses. Janet Abbate traces computing labor in Britain and the United States from the Second World War through the late twentieth century. Early programming was assigned to large numbers of women not because institutions had suddenly recognized their technical authority, but because it was initially classified as clerical calculation and machine operation. Hardware was framed as the true invention, while the people translating mathematical procedures into executable instructions were treated as interchangeable assistants. Gender did not arrive after the technology; it helped determine from the outset what counted as technology and what merited authorship.
The histories of Bletchley Park and ENIAC are particularly important. Women working on codebreaking, ballistic calculations, and program setup entered a field without settled textbooks, programming languages, or occupational rules. They had to understand machines, diagnose faults, and invent workflows. Yet military hierarchy, wartime secrecy, and later commemorative narratives often compressed this work into the label “operator.” Abbate is not simply restoring a roll call of forgotten names. She shows how memory reproduces an occupational hierarchy: when invention is credited to men who designed machines, while patience, coordination, and debugging are cast as feminine traits, core knowledge can be produced by women and still be defined as male property.
The postwar expansion of programming briefly led companies to view women as a large trainable workforce, with lower pay often functioning as an unspoken incentive. That opening was never secure. As software acquired greater economic value, the field redrew its boundaries through the language of “software engineering,” formal degrees, professional associations, and managerial advancement. Work once accessible through mathematics, clerical experience, or internal training was redefined around continuous credentialing and a male-coded career path. From the 1960s onward, aptitude tests, programmer personality profiles, and later “hacker” or “geek” cultures further packaged solitude, competition, and freedom from care responsibilities as signs of technical talent. The decline in women’s participation was not a spontaneous loss of interest; it accompanied a coordinated rise in status and a masculinization of qualifications and culture.
Abbate does not portray women only as people excluded from the profession. Through interviews with fifty-two pioneers, she follows ways in which they altered organizations from within. Elsie Shutt and Stephanie Shirley built software firms around flexible and remote collaboration so that women with care responsibilities could continue highly skilled work. Women in universities and professional networks created mentoring, mutual support, and channels for public intervention. These stories are not offered to prove that a few exceptional women can succeed as entrepreneurs. They demonstrate that the supposedly normal organization of technical work is not a technical necessity: hours, teamwork, promotion, and knowledge sharing can all be designed differently.
The oral-history method distinguishes the book from industry reports that only chart participation rates. Memory can be selective and contradictory, but it records experiences official archives rarely preserve: who was expected to take notes at meetings, who had to establish that she was not the secretary, whose proposal became credible only when repeated by a man, and how motherhood was treated as evidence of insufficient commitment. Once placed within organizational history, the “glass ceiling” is no longer a single barrier at the moment of promotion. It appears as an infrastructure made of task allocation, peer recognition, career tempo, and the stories a profession tells about itself.
This makes Recoding Gender a direct correction to contemporary “pipeline” explanations. If the problem is described as girls failing to choose computer courses, proposed solutions concentrate on encouragement, confidence, and role models. Abbate’s history asks what happens after women enter: which work they receive, how their contributions are priced, who carries care obligations, and why a particular male-coded way of life is mistaken for passion. Increasing entry without changing evaluation and power may only send more people into a pipeline that continues to leak at every institutional joint.
The study also has clear boundaries. It is primarily a history of professional computing in Britain and the United States, and many interviewees were women able to remain in the field and leave a career record. Race, class, disability, colonial relationships, hardware manufacturing, and outsourced global labor receive less sustained attention. A focus on pioneers can invite readers to overestimate individual resilience and understate how immigration status, educational capital, and family wealth determine who can persist. The book should therefore be read alongside Black women’s histories of technology, accounts of global electronics labor, and research on contemporary data annotation, where the feminization of computing work has often not disappeared but moved into lower-paid and less visible locations.
For FemRes, the enduring value of Recoding Gender is that it turns technological gender inequality from a representation problem into a labor-system problem. It gives readers a way to examine today’s AI laboratories, open-source communities, university programs, and start-ups: which tasks are called innovation and which support; who can present long hours as passion and whose care work becomes a professional defect; how credential barriers shift when a field accumulates capital and prestige. History does not reveal an egalitarian golden age in which women once owned computing. It does prove that the current order is not natural. Professional culture has been recoded before, and it can be rewritten again.
