Angels Wear White

Through the perspectives of two girls from different social strata—Mia, an undocumented worker and “outsider,” and Meng Xiaowen, the “victim” of assault—Angels Wear White uncovers how social mechanisms systematically entrap and ignore women behind the facade of a bustling “carnival.” The film does not linger on the sensational details of the assault itself but instead focuses on the hypocrisy, evasion, and transactions of the adult world in the aftermath.

A giant statue of Marilyn Monroe stands by the sea, serving as a symbol of objectified womanhood and a silent observer of this tragedy. Mia witnesses everything through the surveillance monitor; her silence is born of a survival instinct but is also a projection of societal apathy. Meanwhile, Xiaowen’s parents, the police, and lawyers all attempt to cover up the truth or profit from it in seemingly “reasonable” ways, with no one truly caring about the victim’s trauma.

This is not just a film about sexual assault; it is a fable about the state of female existence. It questions every bystander: in the face of power and injustice, have we also become accomplices? Director Vivian Qu uses restrained yet powerful audiovisual language to deliver a sharp indictment of patriarchal society and the adult world.
