Reweaving the World: The Emergence of Ecofeminism
This early collection records ecofeminism emerging between ecology movements, feminism, and women’s spirituality, including tensions later revised by intersectional critique.
Review and reading guide
Edited by Irene Diamond and Gloria Feman Orenstein, Reweaving the World captures ecofeminism at a formative moment when feminist, ecological, peace, antinuclear, animal, and women’s spirituality movements were testing a shared language. Its contributors connect the domination of women with the treatment of land, animals, and colonized peoples as passive resources. “Reweaving” names a political and imaginative attempt to replace hierarchies of separation with relations of interdependence.
The anthology’s range is both historical evidence and argument. Activist accounts sit beside philosophy, cultural criticism, spirituality, and visions of social transformation, showing that ecofeminism did not originate as one doctrine. Some chapters analyze institutions and material power; others reclaim goddess traditions or an affinity between women and nature. Reading them together reveals enduring questions about care, embodiment, militarism, scientific authority, and the values by which economies define life.
It also makes visible the movement’s most contested fault line. Claims of a special female closeness to nature can challenge a devalued culture of care, but they can also essentialize women, erase race and class, appropriate Indigenous knowledge, and leave colonial histories vague. Later intersectional and decolonial ecofeminisms must therefore accompany this collection. Its value is not that every claim remains adequate, but that readers can see a field being made—and learn to distinguish ecological interdependence from a romantic identity imposed on women.
