Listening notes

Surplus Value is a Chinese-language cultural podcast hosted by Zhang Zhiqi, Fu Shiye and Huang Yue. The programme page identifies all three hosts and presents a conversation initiated by women working in media. Its feminist relevance extends beyond explaining theoretical vocabulary to asking how news is produced, cultural work is judged and personal decisions become possible. The directory covers discussions from 2019 to 2020; the public events of that period should remain distinct from present circumstances.

Reproductive choice needs material conditions

Episode 050, on egg freezing and surrogacy, brings Fu Shiye and Zhang Zhiqi into conversation with Li Shumeng. It places reproductive technologies alongside commercial promises, parenthood, household arrangements and public support. Rather than decide whether a technology is inherently liberating, this approach directs attention to the conditions of choice: who can pay, who bears bodily risk, whose care work can be transferred and who must absorb the consequences alone?

The discussion helps distinguish a legally or technically available option from an affordable one. A new market service need not extend the same autonomy to women with fewer resources. Family support may also demand compliance with established gender roles. Analysis needs to retain both agency and constraint, without turning one woman’s decision into a prescription for everyone. Relevant rules require checking by place and date; the episode is not a current medical or legal guide.

News is work before it becomes public knowledge

Episode 049, News at Crisis, has Zhang Zhiqi and Huang Yue speaking with journalists Xie Yujuan and Liu Min about reporting during the Wuhan epidemic. Field reporting and editorial work become ways to examine evidence, judgment, writing and censorship. Its credits also distinguish a programme’s three hosts from the people participating in a particular episode.

This conversation opens questions about whose searching, verification and selection make public facts available. What happens to a reporter’s emotional and practical labour when it disappears from the finished article? Treating journalism solely as a contest of opinions can hide interviews, source relationships, editing and organizational work.

Situated experience remains open to disagreement

Media experience gives these conversations a position rather than a view from nowhere. It does not automatically represent every woman, worker or place. The useful question is whether a personal account becomes something others can contest, supplement and compare. Listen for distinctions between a guest’s professional experience, a host’s interpretation and a claim requiring further evidence.

The programme is consequently a concrete route into Chinese-language women’s public expression: not only what they say, but how reproduction, culture and journalism become matters for shared inquiry. It offers paths for discussion rather than a universal answer to different lives.
